Three years in construction at New Zealand’s famous McMullen & Wing shipyard, Big Fish is a luxury expedition vessel unlike any Expedition vessel ever built. Big fish is a five stateroom vessel and carries a crew of 10. She is the world’s most eco-conscious yacht capable of travelling to any location in the world.

The most unique feature of Big Fish are the decks covered in indestructible granite. There is virtually no teak to be seen and you are actually encouraged to leave your shoes on when boarding her! The granite is cut into tiles and glued onto a cork surface to allow for flexing without cracking said a crew member showing us the boat.

The list goes on with unique features including the swim platform that comes that turns Big Fish into a 5 star beach resort. The entire foredeck of the boat lifts up where the 28’ custom designed dive boat is kept.

Facing forward in the main salon the first thing you will notice besides the enormous windows, granite flooring, modern interior is the HD 3D Video Ceiling. This is unlike anything you have every seen with I don’t know how many screen pieced together offers a floor to ceiling display of forever changing photos. If you want to turn the wall into a cinema the staircase will actually lift up out of the way to give a clear view. Just incredible and a must see.

At more than 12m meters, Big Fish offers the widest and most spacious swim platform ever built on a 45m yacht. The yacht’s normal-sized swim platform expands dramatically by port and starboard stern quarters, which unfold to join the platform structure. When fully unfolded, the entire structure is capable of simultaneously supporting water and boating activities. In addition, the unfolding stern quarters provide additional weather-protected storage of water sports equipment and gear.

Larry Ellison Sells ownership of Rising Sun to David Geffen

I’ve just had a very interesting conversation with Merle Wood who tells me that David Geffen has now taken sole ownership of Rising Sun, the 138m yacht he has co-owned with Larry Ellison for nearly four years.

Both long-standing clients of his, Merle explains that it made perfect sense as Ellison is about to take delivery of his new 88m Feadship Musashi.

Built by Lürssen in 2005 to a Jon Bannenberg design, Rising Sun has in excess of 8,000m² of living space with 82 rooms across five decks. Her features include a gym, a cinema, a wine cellar and a basketball court.

She is currently at the Lürssen yard in Germany where she will spend the winter undergoing some refit/modifications and upgrades for her new owner.

Feadship launches Lady Britt

October 12, 2010 - Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw in the Netherlands has launched the 63.00-metre Feadship Lady Britt in a ceremony attended by hundreds of people that also saw the name of the yacht unveiled for the very first time.

Lady Britt is the first significant yacht ever owned by her Scandinavian owner. “He and his family have enjoyed many charters over the decades, using this time to synthesise exactly what they would like should the time ever be right to commission a new build,” explains Bas Nederpelt, sales and marketing director at Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw.
“In recent years the owners have also deliberately chosen to charter Feadships in order to experience whether premium quality really does make such a difference. The answer was a resounding ‘yes’, leaving the owners to focus on how they would like Feadship to fulfil their ambitions in terms of layout, interior finish and the like. Exceptionally involved in every aspect of the project, including many visits to the De Vries yard and De Voogt Naval Architects, the owners have succeeded in creating a yacht that is the very essence of customisation.”


One of the most striking aspects of this personalised approach is the choice for six large guest suites on the lower deck in order to accommodate family and friends in comfort and style. Two of the suites can be converted into a full-width VIP stateroom to allow a dual principal charterer more space. The owners have chosen a luxury New York apartment feel for their stateroom, complete with separate bathrooms and dressing rooms; enhanced with a private study. Meanwhile, the overall arrangement makes Lady Britt an excellent yacht for charter with a dedicated wellness spa, a separate panoramic gymnasium, an outdoor cinema and an authentic Finnish sauna with its own private access to the ocean. All these facilities complement the very spacious external guest areas.


During the launch ceremony, Henk de Vries thanked the owners for their enormous commitment. “It has been a privilege to see how you have dedicated yourselves to learning about every aspect of yacht building. Even before signing the contract we spent many hours in discussions, and the depth of your knowledge was such that I wondered whether you might actually be going to build the boat yourself. Ultimately, all this know-how allowed you to make excellent decisions once we started work on Lady Britt, and the results are clear for all to see. You have taken a very pretty, classic Feadship design, made it a little longer and sleeker, and fashioned a spectacular yacht of which we are all very proud.”
De Vries also praised the decision to bring in Redman Whiteley Dixon to take care of the interior design brief. “This has resulted in an interior that is modern in terms of style and yet has a warmth and an intimacy that is identifiably Scandinavian in its ambience. All in all, Lady Britt is the finest yacht this yard has built to date.”

Owner’s representative and established Feadship captain Patrick Cowley praised the shipyard for its commitment and passion on the project: “Koninklijke de Vries continually strives to set the highest standards within the yachting industry and Lady Britt is certainly a highly polished testament to their skilled workforce’s pursuit of this prestigious goal. Feadship completes Odyssey refit

October 8, 2010 - Feadship De Vries Makkum has re-launched the 41-meter Feadship Odyssey, originally launched in 1989 as White Rabbit and since called Lady Columbo, Ladina and Bullish. This
major project included extending the hull by three meters and adding significant real estate
to the superstructure. The delighted owners will soon embark for a Caribbean cruise to make
the most of the new hydraulic swim platform, hydraulic passerelle and guest lazarette plus a
host of other facilities designed to maximize onboard comforts.


The yacht was originally purchased in early 2009 by a family looking for a pre-owned yacht
to refit to their personal requirements. “She had to be large enough to cruise the world but
still be able to access secluded areas and ports,” explains Feadship Refit Manager Ico
Vergouwe. “The owners also sought a quality product that they could be sure would retain
her value. As well-maintained Feadships rarely – if ever – drop below their original purchase
price, the clients were convinced that a refitted Feadship would offer better value in every
sense than a new build with virtually any other motoryacht brand.”


After the Feadship Refit Team had visited Florida to discuss the project, the owners had
access to all builder’s information, two decades worth of after-sales data, the design and
engineering team responsible for the original yacht’s concept and, crucially, the craftsmen
who created their new asset.


“Rebuilding a yacht requires a dedicated workforce that is available for the whole project,”
adds Vergouwe. “It is also vital that the yard has the right tools to provide the same quality
work as on the original build. All too often at maintenance and refit yards around the world,
projects are merely facilitated by the yard with the project manager and the accountant being
the sole constant factor in the process. You would not build a yacht at such a facility so why
rebuild one there?”


The primary leisure-based requirements for Odyssey were to create a more distinguished
lazarette and folding swim platform, have larger aft decks for exterior entertainment and a
more elaborate sundeck with a Jacuzzi and sun beds. Once the designers at Feadship De
Voogt Naval Architects started developing alternative profile plans and deck layouts, it
became clear that accommodating such a wish list would involve lengthening the hull by
three metres, enlarging the bridge deck lounge by two metres (including a new head) and
adding an extra metre to the sun deck.


After signing the refit agreement the yard started engineering the aft sections in order to
have production well underway when the yacht arrived at the yard in January 2010. Over the
next nine months Odyssey was completely transformed inside and out, ranging from a
complete repaint of the hull and superstructure to an extensive refurbishment of all luxury
interior areas.

The main deck aft was extended to include a new U-shaped seating arrangement, while a
new tender crane was fitted on the lengthened bridge deck. All decks have been re-laid with
teak and new cap rails adorn every deck. The ‘indoor’ changes are equally impressive, with
new bathrooms in all suites, a new galley interior (including stainless steel furniture and
equipment), a new interior for the extended bridge deck lounge, new provision freezers and
refrigerators, new laundry interior and equipment and a wide-ranging refurbishment of all
crew interior areas. Two new Caterpillar C6.6 100 kW generators have been fitted in the
repainted engine room.

HULL
The hull is built by hand in sandwich composite in a female mould under controlled atmosphere. Monolithic high resistance inner and outer skin made Kevlar®, Aramat®, glass fibre, resin matrix, balsa or PVC foam core (Glass Reinforced Plastic GRP). Resins used on exterior plies are Vinylester type to guaranty a maximal resistance to osmosis. Orthophtalic and isophtalic polyester resins are used for the rest of the stratification according to needs. Structure reinforcements, floor frames, stringers,
omega are made of carbon and glass fibre skins, and PVC foam or balsa core.


The lamination process is carried out in accordance with approved drawings using layers of chopped strand mats and woven roving whose weave, weight and size are closely studied to give optimal mechanical resistance, following structural calculations carried out using the FEA method.
